I spent the 14th on a day tour to Gallipoli, Turkey. It was a full day as the drive from Istanbul to Gallipoli took around 4 hours each way. Our guide Hassan was very knowledgeable about the facts of what actually happened in the battle which occurred on April 25, 1915. The battle was between the Australian New Zealand Army Corp (ANZAC) and the Turkish Army on the coast of the Gallipolli Peninsula west of Istanbul. Where the battle occurred was strategic in World War 1 - because it was next to the waterway that controlled the access to Istanbul and the Black Sea. I won't go much into the history of it all. Some of you may remember my emails from my time in Australia - where I attended the dawn service on ANZAC day in 2007 (April 25) in Perth - which commemorated all the soldiers that fought in that battle. After I learned about it in Australia - I knew that if I ever get to Turkey - I would go to Gallipoli. I will include some pictures from that day.
To all my Aussie and Kiwi friends out there - this day is dedicated to you.
